This new project “Canto Coimbra” came into being because of a desire to help create a better understanding of the most authentic and representative form of music – the Fado – from our area, from our Portugal, and to make more people aware of it. The Portuguese guitarra, with its very individual and unique sound forms – together with the songs – the traditional basis for this characteristic music. It is the ultimate manifestation of Portuguese culture. An arousal of feelings and emotions. The group was formed only a short while ago. It contains a number of artists who have been responsible for a more artistic and musical interpretation of this music over the last few years, rooted in the “Fado de Coimbra”. They have a quite different idea about the future; with a feeling for the newest musical trends, they create their own new sounds. The group’s repertoire draws on both traditional and modern themes. Some of them have been adapted and rewritten in such a way that the guitarra enters into new relationships with other instruments, such as the accordion, piano, acoustic bass and the classical Spanish guitar. During their performances, the members of this group take you along on a journey through time. They tell you the story of the Portuguese song. At the same time, modern techniques are used to create all sorts of sounds and images in order to make you, the audience, feel happy. The members of the group belong to the well-known university choir “Coro dos Antigos Orfeonistas da Associação Académica de Coimbra” and they all have impressive careers – both musical and academic.

Ricardo Dias, as the man in charge of Canto Coimbra, aims to ensure the musicality of the Fado Canção de Coimbra knows no borders. He wants to allow the music to develop; to bare its soul to time; to caress the listener’s senses. His musicality, creativity and sensitivity have made him one of the most successful musical producers and writers, working with both modern musicians and performers, and those of preceding generations. In addition to his involvement in Canto Coimbra, he is a member of the “Brigada Vítor Jara” as well as their musical director. And he is Cristina Branco’s pianist, arranger and musical director.
