Biography
The birth of a new capeverdian star “Nos raça”, the first step
Nancy Adelaide Vieira was born in 1975, in Guine Bissau, where her parents were preparing Cape Verde’s independence. Nancy arrived in Cape Verde when she was only two months old. It was in the Cape Verde islands that her passion for music thrived as she sang for her friends, at her house, accompanied by her father on the guitar. Nancy was fourteen years old when she left Cape Verde to live in Lisbon, since in 1989 her father, Herculano Vieira, born in Boavista Island, occupied the Cape Verde ambassador’s position in Portugal.
In 1995 Nancy Vieira presented herself in front of an audience for the first time when she took part in a singing contest, which she won. The prize was to record an album that was named “Nos raça”.
“Nos raça” soon caught the attention of the press stealing Nancy from anonymity and making her a household name in Cape Verde. Little by little her deep and sweet molasses voice has been conquering the world and Nancy has since been invited to be on the same stage with some of the most important singers from Cape Verde such as Cesária Évora, Bana, Tito Paris, Ildo Lobo and Boy Gê Mendes.
In November 2003, Nancy Vieira takes part in the show “Women of Cape Verde” together with several other cape verdian singers, touring the United Kingdom. This show was very well received by the British press, namely by The Independent.
“Segred”, the start-up
In 2004 Nancy Vieira releases “Segred” produced by Toy Vieira, a respected songwriter, musician and producer from Cape Verde. He worked in close collaboration with Djim Job on the arrangements and orchestrations. “Segred” was played by excellent musicians as well: Vaiss, Zé António, Kau Paris, Dalu e Iduino Tavares, amongst others. With this work Nancy becomes a name to be reckoned with in the World Music’s panorama.
“Segred” places Nancy at a professional level and takes her music to international stages in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the USA and Angola, amongst others.
2005 ends in a very positive way for Nancy Vieira, since she is invited to be part of the acclaimed Rui Veloso’s last album “Espuma das Canções”.
From all her accomplishments in 2006, her United Kingdom tour must have been one of its highlights with an extremely successful performance for BBC World Service in Bristol which is later radio broadcast for millions of people, as well as with a concert at the famous Momo’s Kemia Bar in London. She is also invited to the BBC Radio 3, where she is interviewed and where she performs three songs accompanied by her band.
Lus
Nancy Vieira's third album “Lus” was released in 2007. As in “Segred”, the new album includes songs from some of today's best capeverdian composers.
On stage
When Nancy sings we feel her utter delivery through her expressive eyes. Despite her shyness offstage, onstage Nancy Vieira is a self-assured, spontaneous singer, confident in her artistry and soulfulness. Nancy’s soul is pervaded by the rhythms from Cape Verde like the morna, coladera, funana, Cola San Jon, taking the audience on a journey across the islands of Cape Verde.
Press
Press (English)
“Besides the healthy update of the Cape Verdian music, the greatest asset of “Segred” is Nancy’s voice, warm and velvety, secure and without artifices beyond the emotions conveyed. Nancy shall not be a secret anymore.”
Luís Silva, in Correio da Manhã - Portugal
“Nancy Vieira has been seen as one of the female revelations of the music from Cape Verde ever since her victory on a television competition, to the release of her two solo albums, presenting a new interpretation of Sao Vicente’s music.”
In www.visaonews.com - Portugal
“Nancy Vieira, an incredible voice, offered two great songs, “Peca sem dor” and a lavish cover of “Alto Cutelo,” during which the room erupted in claps while whispering the song’s closing line “Nôs Terra… Cabo Verde.”
Osvaldo Dos Reis in www.CVMusicWorld.com
“Nancy Vieira - A Shining Star
“Nancy Vieira is evidence that possessing a voice does not necessarily mean that you can be a singer. It takes energy, confidence, passion, a fair amount of living, class, grace, and definitely a stage presence to become a great singer. She has it all. » Osvaldo Dos Reis in www.CVMusicWorld.com
